Project Description
The Luthuli Museum is located in Groutville on the Kwa-Zulu Natal North Coast. The museum is dedicated to the life and causes of Chief Albert Luthuli, South Africa’s first Nobel Peace Prize winner. The museum site contains three buildings, namely Chief Albert Luthuli’s historical house, a media centre and a small administrative building. The Luthuli Museum is maintained by the National Department of Public Works (NDPW). The NDPW appointed the IDT as their implementation agents to affect a CO2 emission-reduction project through energy efficiency interventions. The IDT called for proposals and accepted the proposal made by Reonet. Reonet’s project proposal incorporated the following works and activities:
- Replacing all energy-inefficient air-conditioning units with modern energy efficient units that use non-ozone depleting refrigerants
- Replacing energy-inefficient lighting with LED lighting
- Installing occupancy and light sensors to optimise HVAC and lighting use
- Installing a solar PV system to provide energy to all lighting
- Installing water efficient drip irrigation system plus rain-water harvesting tanks
- Installing check meters and an automated remote metering system, RealSens™
Project Benefits
The project delivered the following benefits:
- Energy use reduced by 34% (See graph bottom left)
- CO2 emissions reduced by 26 tonnes per annum, from 77 to 51 tonnes
- Water use almost halved (see graph bottom right)
- The RealSens remote metering system will assist museum staff to monitor and control energy and water use on a daily basis
