Project Description
The Douw Steyn Dam is located on the Frikkie-se-loop River, a tributory of the Mogol River, which flow into the Limpopo system. Douw Steyn Dam was built as a multi-purpose dam, namely to supply drinking water to the Shambala Eco-reserve as well as to provide habitat and a secure source of drinking water to the extensive fauna of the reserve. The dam is inter alia a habitat for many fish species, crocodile, hippo and leguan. Douw Steyn Dam was built as a multiple arch and buttress dam in the labour-intensive rubble rock masonry concrete construction technique. Douw Steyn Dam has a capacity of 1.37 million cubic meters, is 22 meters high and has a spillway crest length of 380 meters.

- Water security to the Shambala eco reserve
- Improving water supply for environmental reserve releases during times of drought
- Generating many jobs during the construction of the dam and in the operation of the eco reserve
